Whitney Houston dies, aged 48

Whitney Houston has died, aged 48.

Following early reports from Los Angeles, her publicist Kristen Foster confirmed that the singer had been found dead in her Beverly Hilton Hotel room on Saturday afternoon (February 11).

Houston, mother to Bobbi Kristina, 19, had been staying at the hotel ahead of attending Clive Davis's pre-Grammy gala, where she had been tipped to perform.

Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen confirmed that the singer was pronounced dead at 3.55pm EST. He told reporters that there are "no obvious signs of criminal intent", adding that an investigation into the cause of death has begun.

A "devastated" Davis proceeded to hold his annual bash, which he dedicated to his friend, telling guests: "She was full of life, looking forward for tonight. She loved music and she loved this night that celebrated music.

"Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage so many times. So simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on."

The Grammy Awards will pay tribute to the artist, with Oscar winning singer Jennifer Hudson due to perform a "respectful musical tribute" to Houston.

Neil Portnow, president of The Recording Academy, said in a statement: "Whitney Houston was one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades.

"Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice."

Her official website now directs users to a tribute page (seen above), on which it simply states: "In loving memory".

Aretha Franklin, Godmother to the late star, said in a short statement: "I just can't talk about it now. It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen."

Amateur footage of Houston's final performance at Kelly Price's 'For The Love of R&B' Grammy party at True Hollywood on Friday (February 10) night has surfaced online. The video, below, shows the duo perform 'Yes, Jesus Loves Me'.

In what will be her fourth theatrical release, Houston had most recently starred alongside Jordin Sparks in upcoming remake Sparkle. Her final studio recordings will reportedly feature in the film, including a duet with the American Idol star.

Tracks from her back catalog are already making their way up download charts around the world, with her version of 'I Will Always Love You' currently at number three in the US iTunes chart. Meanwhile, the UK's Official Charts Company said that it "understands that sales are already surging".

A "devastated" Simon Cowell confirmed reports that the singer was being considered for a judging role on the second series of the American version of The X Factor. Cowell said that a meeting had been planned for Monday to discuss the possible appointment of the "legendary diva".

Houston, who starred alongside Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard, was regarded by her peers and fans as the voice of a generation. Reacting to the news, Mariah Carey tweeted: "Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston. My heartfelt condolences to Whitney's family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth."

The New Jersey-born singer, who had battled with drug and alcohol addiction, ended her 14-year marriage to singer Bobby Brown in 2006.

UK Chart Show Chart Hopeful:
Sub Focus / Kenzie May - Falling Down

London based Subfocus has become a household name among electronic music lovers over the past few years due to his razor sharp production style and versatility behind the decks. Anyone who heard his debut self-titled EP in 2009 undoubtably recognized this young producer’s skills as he rose beyond the rigid format of Drum and Bass and began producing everything from electro to dubstep, all with a signature flavor all his own. And let’s not forget that the massive hit “Promises” made famous by Skrillex’s remixing skills was originally a production by Sub Focus and Nero. This month Sub Focus returns to the forefront of the dubstep scene with his new single “Falling Down”. Once again his exquisite taste for vocal hooks and ear stomping basslines takes Sub Focus’ tracks higher than the rest.

LA Reid signs up for second season of 'X Factor' USA

LA Reid will reportedly be returning to The X Factor USA.

The Epic Records chairman signed a contract on Friday (February 3) tying him into resuming his role as judge on the show for its second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fellow judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, as well as host Steve Jones, have all confirmed their exit from the show within the last week.

Mariah Carey was recently reported to have been approached by Simon Cowell to fill one of the vacant spots on the judges' panel.

However, Carey's husband Nick Cannon denied the suggestions, saying that the role would be a "step down" for the singer.

It was also alleged that Cowell has offered BeyoncĂ© $100m (£63m) to join The X Factor USA.

Del Rey: 'I may not make another album'

Lana Del Rey has suggested that she may not release a follow-up to her album Born To Die.

The 'Video Games' singer explained that she feels so content with the LP that she is not even contemplating another release.

'I don't think I'll write another record," she told Vogue. "What would I say? I feel like everything I wanted to say, I've said already."

Del Rey also said that she viewed Born To Die as a tribute to her former wild lifestyle.

"The album is a tribute to living life on the wild side. I'm sort of kidding because I'm not that wild any more... used to drink a lot. Too much," she said. "I haven't had a drink for seven years now."

Del Rey took to Twitter this week and thanked fans for having "softened" poor reviews for Born To Die.

The album is expected to reach number one on the UK chart on Sunday (February 5) after outselling the rest of the Top 10 earlier this week.

Madonna battling injury ahead of Super Bowl show

Madonna has revealed that she is battling to recover from a number of injuries ahead of her Super Bowl performance this weekend.

The 'Celebration' singer has been undergoing rehab sessions after pulling a hamstring and hurting her nose in a microphone accident during rehearsals.

"My nose is healed. I'm okay. Lots of warm-ups and tapings and ultrasounds," she explained. "I feel like I'm one of the football players right now with all the physical therapy I had to do. Mind over matter."

The 53-year-old previously assured fans that she will be putting on a "spectacular show" for the Super Bowl.

"[I don't want to] give anything away [because I want viewers to be] knocked out of their seats from beginning to end," she said. "I'm so excited to be here."

Madonna is to give her first performance of new single 'Give Me All Ur Luvin'' at the Super Bowl.

The track, which also features Nicki Minaj and MIA, was unveiled earlier today and will serve as the lead single from her 12th studio album MDNA, out March 26.

Super Bowl XLVI takes place on Sunday (February 5) at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Rooney Mara 'happy for break from Dragon Tattoo'

Rooney Mara has said that she is happy to take a break from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The actress revealed that while she loved working on the David Fincher film, she needed to take time away from playing the character of Lisbeth Salander.

"I'm happy to have a little break, but I am eager to revisit her," Mara told Collider. "But, I'm happy to have a break first."

The 26-year-old went on to say that she enjoys playing characters that differ from herself.

"For myself, it probably is easier to play a character who is much different, with an accent and who looks different and walks different," Mara said.

"I find that much more enjoyable," she added. "But, at the same time, I felt like [Lisbeth] Salander was very familiar to me. We do have a lot in common. I think a little bit of both is good."

Mara recently insisted that she is drawn to performances that receive less mainstream attention.

The actress signed on to Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects in late January.

Harrison Ford in talks for Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner' follow-up

Harrison Ford has reportedly entered talks to appear in Ridley Scott's new Blade Runner project.

The actor has apparently been approached to reprise his role as Rick Deckard for the follow-up to Scott's 1982 sci-fi.

Discussions are in "very early stages", according to Twitch Film, but Ford's potential recruitment appears to have debunked suggestions that no original castmembers will be returning.

The move also adds credence to reports that Scott wants the film to be a direct sequel to Blade Runner, rather than a reboot or prequel.

Producer Andrew Kosove claimed last August that Ford will not be invited back for the picture.

"In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott," he said. "But if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no.

"This is a total reinvention. In my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting."

Alcon Entertainment confirmed that more details about the new Blade Runner, including confirmation of its screenwriter, will be announced by the end of Feburary.

Scott is currently working on Alien-inspired movie Prometheus, which features the likes of Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron.

Demi Moore checks into rehab

Demi Moore has rejected family advice to enter rehab, a report has claimed.

The St Elmo's Fire actress, who was rushed to hospital last Monday (January 23) after collapsing, is rumored to be suffering from exhaustion and anorexia.

Despite close friend Patty Jenkins's insistence that Moore is "doing great", an insider told HollywoodLife that daughter Rumer Willis is particularly keen for her to seek treatment at a clinic.

"Demi needs help but she's not ready to get it," a source claims. "She doesn't want to check into rehab even though her daughters want her to.

"Especially Rumer... Demi thinks her problems are emotional and that she doesn't need rehab."

The 49-year-old, who has received public support from George Clooney and Kirstie Alley, was released from hospital last Thursday (January 26).

Katy Perry jokes about Tim Tebow romance on 'NFL Honors'

Katy Perry has joked about her alleged romance with Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

While presenting on the show NFL Honors, Perry came face-to-face with Tebow and gave him a special greeting.

"Hi Tim, my parents said hi," Perry said.

The popstar's mother Mary Hudson is reportedly a fan of the American football player and hopes to hook up her daughter with the NFL star.

Perry recently split from husband Russell Brand after just 14 months of marriage.

However, the singer was allegedly spotted wearing her wedding ring in mid-January.
